I just left the dentist office and the receptionist paid me a great compliment. She told me that out of all the appointment reminder calls they make I’m they only man they enjoy calling. They say I sound so cheerful it’s a delight to talk to me. A pleasant voice on the phone even when someone is reminding me of a dentist appointment; Zig Ziglar would be proud. I didn’t always sound pleasant on the phone but I was blessed to be the son of a great sales man that raised his kids in the family business.
At about the age of ten I was allowed, or forced, to start answering the family business phone. I can still remember my dad coming in and waiting until I got off the phone and saying, “no one wants to talk to someone that sounds bored, mad, or dead.” He said, “Smile when you are on the phone.” Always smile and keep smiling, it will be noticed by the person on the other end of the phone conversation. Smiling on the phone has increased my telephone sales one hundred fold.
It’s not always easy to remember to smile. My dad used to either watch us when we were on the phone or call us, talk for awhile, and then say “are you smiling?” If you didn’t have the opportunity to get great telephone sales training from your dad, try putting a note on the phone that says smile.
